On August 26, 2016, delegates from the Faculty of Medicine included Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Pewpan Maleewong, Associate Dean for Research Affairs, Prof. Banchob Sripa, Director of Tropical Disease Research Center and WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Control of Opisthorchiasis and Dr. Daris Theerakulpisut, Assistant Dean for International Relations and Cooperation Strategies visited Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA together with other delegates from Khon Kaen University, namely Assoc. Prof. Nawarat Wara-Aswapati Charoen, Vice President for Foreign Affairs, Asst. Prof. Denpong Soodphakdee, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Communications, Assoc. Prof. Waranuch Pitiphat, Dean, Faculty of Dentistry, Dr. Kitt Tientanopajai, Director, Bureau of Information Technology, Assoc. Prof. Wongsa Laohasiriwong, Vice Dean for International Relations, Faculty of Public Health and Assoc. Prof. Bandit Thinkhamrop, Director of DAMASAC, Faculty of Public Health.
The link between KKU and MIT began in early 2016 when Dr. Michael G Morley and Dr. Katharine Morley from Harvard Medical School who have been working with KKU for almost ten years introduced KKU to Sana-MIT which is a non¬profit organization under MIT whose goals are to democratize access to quality healthcare through open source technologies. Plans have been set to organize a Bootcamp and Hackathon between KKU and MIT in Khon Kaen during 9 -13 January 2017. The theme of KKU mHealth hackathon has be established, provisionally titled “healthcare outreach to remote regions”.
KKU delegates discussed details of the upcoming event and further research collaboration with Dr. Glen Comiso, Chief of Staff at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Roger Mark, Laboratory Director, Dr. James Weiss from MIT Biotechnology group, Dr. Leo Anthony Celi, Dr. Kenneth E. Paik and Dr. Alon Dagan.
After the discussion, the MIT team gave KKU delegates a tour of the MIT media lab. Dr. Arup Chakraborty, Director of the MIT Institute of Medical Engineering and Science also welcomed KKU delegates and gave an introduction to the MIT Institute of Medical Engineering and Science.
