Potential multiparty research collaboration with Italy, Nicaragua and MD-KKU on Chronic Kidney Disease Prevention

 

on February 24, 2022, Associate Professor Wimonrat Sriraj, MD, Associate Dean for Research and International Affairs, MD, welcomed Dr. Andrea Grillo from the Italian Society of Nephrology and Azienda USL Toscana Nord Ovest Local Health Unit Northwest Tuscany, Italy, to a meeting with colleagues from MD-KKU Chronic Kidney Disease Research Team.

 

The meeting, held in Kawee Tungsubutr Meeting Room, MD-KKU, was to exchange and compare academic knowledge and management of Kidney Disease prevention for populations in the northeast region of Thailand and in Meso, or, Central America Continent: Nicaragua.

The meeting discussed possibilities for cooperative research projects between relevant teams across Thailand, Italy, and Nicaragua.

 

Speakers at the meeting were:

  1. Dr. Andrea Grillo, PhD, on “CKD in Nicaragua”,
  2. Associate Professor Sirirat Anutrakulchai, MD, CKD Research Group, MD-KKU, on KKU “CKD Net”, and
  3. Assistant Professor Dr. Ubol Cha-on, CKD Research Group, MD-KKU, on “Community/ Basic research to detect the root of problems and for sustainable correction”

On February 15, 2022, During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Memorandum of Agreement Signing Ceremony on Double Degree Program for Doctoral Degree was held online via Zoom Meeting webinar participated by high ranking administrator of the two institutes between Fujita Health University, Japan and Khon Kaen university, Thailand at KKU-MED Alumni Association Meeting Room, 3rd Floor, Conventional Academic Building, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University.

This Letter of Intent is for the purpose of establishing cooperation plan to improve medical service, academic service, and research service between the both Universities in the field of medicine and other related field. We would like to express our appreciation to coordinators of this linkage program that the Fujita Health University and Khon Kaen University have enjoyed a long standing friendship with each other. Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program (PMAYP) Conference 2021-2022

 

On February 10, 2022, Assoc. Prof. Apichat Jiravuttipong Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University officially opened and welcomed guests to the Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program (PMAYP) Conference 2021-2022 held by Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, The e-Asia Joint Research Program, National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) and Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program at Lecture Room 1, 4th  Floor, Wechwichakarn Building, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, Khon Kaen and online (via facebook live: https://www.facebook.com/medkku) on the titled “Targeting cell cycle for Precision Treatment of Cancer and Advanced Technology for cancer Research.

The purpose of the symposium was to encourage exchange cutting-edge research and technologies and to promote discussion between professors, lecturers, researchers, medical staff and students. The conference was moderated by Prof. Sopit Wongkham Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, the event started with an overview of the Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program.

Prof. Peter Sicinski, M.D., PhD.  from Department of Genetics, Harvard Medical School, and Department of Cancer Biology, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, Harvard University attend the Mentor Session spoke on the topics of ‘Cell cycle machinery in development and in cancer and special talked ‘How come a medical doctor to be outstanding scientist’.

Prof. Seiji Okada, M.D., PhD. From Division of Hematopoiesis, Center for AIDS Research, and Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Kumamoto University spoke on topics of ‘eAsia: Assisted technologies for cancer research

Dr.Charupong Saengboonmee PMAYP Scholar Year 2018, Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, spoke on the ‘Cyclins and Cyclin Dependent Kinases: A Potential Target-Treatment for Cholangiocarcinoma with Diabetes.

Assoc. Prof.Siwanon Jirawatnotai Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University spoke on the ‘Overcoming Cancer Drug Resistance Using the Acquired Vulnerability Screens.

Assoc. Prof.Kulthida Vaeteewoottacharn Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University spoke on the ‘Initiation of Thai Patient-Derived Xenograft Cancer Model Biobank for Precision Medicine.

Closed the morning session with Asst. Prof.Wunchana Seubwai Department of Forensic Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University on the ‘A Pilot Study Using Big Data Analytics for Cancer Research.

The seminar was a great success with participants in the auditorium and online.

 

 

 

 

MD-KKU welcomes Overseas Visiting Professor from Harvard University, USA

 

Associate Professor Apichat Jiravuttipong, MD, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University recently welcomed Professor Piotr (Peter) Sicinski, MD, PhD, Department of Genetics, and Department of Cancer Biology, Dana-Ferber Cancer Institute, Harvard University, USA, to MD-KKU.  Professor Sicinski visited Khon Kaen between 9 and 13, 2022, as an overseas visiting professor in the Division of Research and International Relations Affairs.  During his visit he was the keynote speaker on Cell cycle machinery in development and in cancer” at the Joint symposium of Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program (PMAYP) and eAsia Meeting on Targeting cell cycle for precision treatment of cancer and Advanced technology for cancer research.  He also gave a special talk on How a medical doctor came to be outstanding scientist and contributed to “Meet the mentor” supervisory round table discussion.  Professor Sicinski to MD-KKU give our medical students valuable opportunity to interact with a world class clinician/ researcher, to stimulate their future medical practice and research.

Associate Professor Wimonrat Sriraj, MD, Associate Dean for Research and International Affairs, Professor Sopit Wongkham, Associate Professor Atith Silsirivanit, Acting Head of Department of Biochemistry, and Dr. Jarupong Saengboonmee, Department of Biochemistry, MD-KKU, also participated the joint symposium.

 

At a business meeting on February 11, 2022, Dean Apichat Jiravuttipong and Professor Peter Sicinski, discussed:

  • the development of collaborative research between MD-KKU and Dana-Farbor Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, with Professor Peter Sicinski and Dr. Jarupong Saengboonmee as Principal Investigators.
  • the development of a joint course between MD-KKU and Harvard Medical School. Fortunately, Professor Peter is the Director of that particular course at Harvard Medical School.
  • the Dean also arranged for Professor Sicinski to visit the Kidney Dialysis Unit in the HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana Memorial Building in Srinagarind Hospital.

Collaborative research agreement to combat cholangiocarcinoma between Khon Kaen University and McMaster University, Canada has been signed

 

Associate Professor Dr. Pattapong Kessomboon of Department of Community Medicine and Professor Dr.Banchob Sripa of the WHO Collaborating Center for Research and Control of Opisthorchiasis, Faculty of Medicine and Professor Dr.Gina Agarwal and Assistant Professor Dr.Ricardo Angeles of the Department of Family Medicine, McMaster University, Canada have jointly planned a collaborative research project to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of an enhanced community-based health education and communication approach to preventing cholangiocarcinoma. The project is financially supported by the Thai Health Systems Research Institute and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The project aims to generate practical knowledge that can be applied to other areas with similar problems both in Thailand and in neighboring countries. Researchers also hope to learn more about the barriers and facilitators for preventing CCA, including how culture, governance and health systems may impact the rates of infection.

 

MDKKU-Professor’s presentation to Thailand’s Health Systems Research Institute (HSRI)

 

The Health Systems Research Institute (HSRI), is an autonomous Thai government agency that researches emerging health-related economic, social and political issues.  Its major objective is to achieve effective knowledge management for the Thai Health System.

On January 28, 2022, the HSRI held an online seminar entitled “Entering a new dimension in health system research and development”.

Assistant Professor Dr. Rosawan Areemit, pediatrician and lecturer, Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, presented at the seminar on the topic of “Research Techniques: Professional Management Experience”. She shared knowledge on HSRI strategies, professional research techniques, and HSRI research proposal submissions for HSRI funding.

HSRI has continuously adjusted its operations to align with emerging priorities of the Thai public health system. Medicine and public health research plans to focus on the field of treatment screening, drug development and cancer reduction, rare diseases, infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases and pharmacogenomics groups. In addition, it aims to promote prevention and treatment   the development of the genomics medical industry, to strengthen the health-care system and respond to crises in a timely manner.
