The project emphasizes studying the systematic interactions between human behavior, animals, and the environment that may lead to zoonotic disease transmission. The PANDA project incorporates a multidisciplinary approach, including in-depth interviews, community mapping, and risk assessment tools. The study is conducted in northern Thai-Lao border communities and funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, Germany.

The visitors witnessed the remarkable contributions of Village Health Volunteers (VHVs), whose grassroots efforts are central to the model’s success. Their work in raising community awareness and promoting preventive behaviors showcased the power of local engagement.
At Lawa School, the delegation observed the “Liver Fluke-Free School Program”, which educates young minds on hygiene and parasite prevention through interactive learning. Students proudly demonstrated their projects, exemplifying how education can transform community health from the ground up.
The delegation also explored a local fermented fish production site, delving into efforts to reduce parasite risks by encouraging safe preparation and cooking practices.

The Faculty of Medicine at Khon Kaen University hosted the 51st Annual Meeting of the Physiological Society of Thailand from November 13-15, 2024, at the Avani Khon Kaen Hotel & Convention Centre. Organized in collaboration with the Physiological Society of Thailand, the conference focused on “Functional Food & Health Innovation: Opportunities and Challenges for Future Trends,” drawing interest from international researchers and scholars worldwide.
Prof. Dr. Poungrat Pakdeechote, Head of the Department of Physiology, led a delegation of esteemed international experts, including Prof. Silvia M. Arribas from Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, a specialist in cardiometabolic diseases influenced by fetal programming, and Prof. Maria Angeles Martin Cabrejas, renowned for her research in valorizing agricultural by-products into functional food ingredients. They met with the executive team at the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, and were warmly welcomed by Asst. Prof. Supawan Laohasiriwong, MD, Assistant Dean for International Relations and Corporate Communication, along with Assoc. Prof. Parichat Prachaney, PhD, Assistant Dean for Strategic Planning and Quality Development. The discussions centered on fostering international collaborations, with a focus on medical student exchanges, graduate research opportunities, and advancing knowledge in physiology.
Prof. Arribas and Prof. Martin Cabrejas also delivered keynote speeches, highlighting the role of functional foods and health innovations in addressing future health challenges. This conference provided a significant platform for researchers and medical students to exchange knowledge and strengthen global partnerships in physiology and health innovation, paving the way for sustainable health advancements.

ศาสตราจารย์ ดร.พวงรัตน์ ภักดีโชติ คณะแพทยศาสตร์ หัวหน้าสาขาวิชาสรีรวิทยา ได้นำทีมผู้เชี่ยวชาญจากต่างประเทศ ได้แก่ Prof. Silvia M. Arribas จาก Universidad Autonoma de Madrid ซึ่งเชี่ยวชาญด้านโรคหัวใจและหลอดเลือดที่เกิดจากการเขียนรหัสตั้งแต่ระยะทารกในครรภ์ และ Prof. Maria Angeles Martin Cabrejas ซึ่งมีชื่อเสียงในงานวิจัยด้านการพัฒนาอาหารจากผลพลอยได้ทางการเกษตร เข้าพบผู้บริหารคณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น โดยได้รับการต้อนรับจาก ผู้ช่วยศาสตราจารย์แพทย์หญิงสุภวรรณ เลาหศิริวงศ์ ผู้ช่วยคณบดีฝ่ายวิเทศสัมพันธ์และการสื่อสารองค์กร และ รองศาสตราจารย์ดร.ปาริฉัตร ประจะเนย์ ผู้ช่วยคณบดีฝ่ายวางแผนเชิงกลยุทธ์และพัฒนาคุณภาพ การประชุมดังกล่าวมีการพูดคุยเกี่ยวกับโอกาสในการแลกเปลี่ยนนักศึกษาแพทย์และนักศึกษาบัณฑิตศึกษา รวมถึงความร่วมมือในการวิจัย เพื่อพัฒนาองค์ความรู้ด้านสรีรวิทยาให้ก้าวไกลยิ่งขึ้น
ในการประชุมครั้งนี้ Prof. Arribas และ Prof. Martin Cabrejas ยังเป็นวิทยากรพิเศษ โดยเน้นหัวข้อเรื่องอาหารฟังก์ชันและนวัตกรรมด้านสุขภาพซึ่งจะมีบทบาทสำคัญในอนาคต งานนี้ถือเป็นโอกาสสำคัญที่นักวิจัยและนักศึกษาแพทย์จะได้ร่วมแบ่งปันองค์ความรู้ และเสริมสร้างความร่วมมือระหว่างประเทศในการพัฒนานวัตกรรมด้านสุขภาพอย่างยั่งยืน
On November 5, 2024, the Faculty of Medicine at Khon Kaen University welcomed Dr. Michael K. Ackland, an overseas visiting professor with the Department of Orthopaedics. Dr. Ackland, a renowned orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine from New England Baptist Hospital, USA, visited the university to discuss establishing a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at facilitating exchanges of researchers, faculty, students, and other potential medical partnerships.
Assoc. Prof. Thuss Sanguansak, Vice Dean for International Relations and Corporate Communication, along with faculty members from the Department of Orthopaedics, warmly received Dr. Ackland on behalf of the university’s administration.

Khon Kaen, Thailand – Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Medicine recently welcomed Dr. Amr Soliman, MD, a Medical Professor and Director of the Cancer Epidemiology Education in Special Populations (CEESP) Program from the School of Medicine, City University of New York (CUNY). Dr. Soliman, who is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cancer Education, visited to discuss potential student exchange programs and collaborative research opportunities between the institutions.
During his visit, Dr. Soliman was welcomed by Assoc. Prof. Thuss Sanguansak, MD, Vice Dean for International Relations and Corporate Communication, and Assoc. Prof. Warachaya Phanphruk, MD, Assistant for International Relations and Corporate Communication. Dr. Sauwanan Bumrerraj, MD, Head of the Department of Community Medicine, Family Medicine, and Occupational Medicine, led discussions with Dr. Soliman, focusing on the potential for international student exchanges and joint research initiatives, particularly in the field of cancer epidemiology and public health.
