The Faculty of Medicine at Khon Kaen University (KKU) has taken a significant step towards strengthening international academic collaboration by welcoming Professor Yoshiharu Matsuura and Professor Tetsuya Iida from the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, Osaka University, Japan. Their visit, from March 18 to 22, 2025, focused on advancing infectious disease research and exploring the development of a Double Degree Program in Microbiology between the two institutions.

The visit was attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Assoc. Prof. Daris Theerakulpisut, Assistant Dean for International Relations and Corporate Communication, Asst. Prof. Dr. Wises Namwat, Head of the Department of Microbiology, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Supranee Phanthanawiboon, along with faculty members and researchers from both universities. The discussions aimed at establishing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to facilitate student exchanges and collaborative research in microbiology and infectious diseases.

Elevating Infectious Disease Research Through Global Collaboration

The visit is part of a broader academic exchange program designed to enhance diagnostic technologies and study pathogenesis mechanisms of viral and bacterial infections. This initiative fosters collaboration between KKU and Osaka University researchers, allowing them to share expertise and develop innovative solutions for emerging infectious diseases.

Additionally, the proposed Double Degree Program in Microbiology will provide postgraduate students with the opportunity to conduct research and receive training in both Thailand and Japan, benefiting from cutting-edge laboratory facilities and mentorship from leading microbiologists and infectious disease specialists.

Academic Seminar: Tackling Emerging Infectious Diseases

The visit also featured a high-level academic seminar, “Emerging and Reemerging Viral and Bacterial Threats: Advances in Detection and Pathogenesis Mechanism,” where professors from Osaka University served as keynote speakers. The seminar brought together researchers, faculty members, and students to exchange knowledge on the latest developments in infectious disease research, including strategies to combat newly emerging and reemerging pathogens.

This collaboration underscores Khon Kaen University’s commitment to becoming a regional hub for medical research and education. Establishing an MOU with Osaka University for the Double Degree Program in Microbiology would mark a significant milestone in strengthening Thailand’s academic and research capabilities in infectious diseases, further positioning KKU as a key player in global health research.

รศ. ดร. นพ. ดริส ธีระกุลพิศุทธิ์ ผู้ช่วยฝ่ายวิเทศสัมพันธ์และสื่อสารองค์กร คณะแพทยศาสตร์ มข. ผศ. ดร. วิเศษ นามวาท หัวหน้าสาขาวิชาจุลชีววิทยา และ รศ. ดร. สุปราณี พันธุ์ธนวิบูลย์ ร่วมให้การต้อนรับและประชุมหารือ โดยมีเป้าหมายในการพัฒนาโครงการ Double Degree ร่วมกันระหว่างมหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่นและมหาวิทยาลัยโอซากา เพื่อเปิดโอกาสให้นักศึกษาระดับบัณฑิตศึกษาได้ศึกษาและทำวิจัยทั้งในประเทศไทยและญี่ปุ่น

การประชุมครั้งนี้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของความร่วมมือด้านโรคติดเชื้อ โดยมุ่งเน้น การพัฒนาการตรวจวินิจฉัยและศึกษากลไกเชิงพยาธิกำเนิดของโรคติดเชื้อ จากไวรัสและแบคทีเรีย รวมถึงการขยายเครือข่ายความร่วมมือทางวิชาการระหว่างสองมหาวิทยาลัย

ศาสตราจารย์ทั้งสองยังร่วมเป็นวิทยากรหลักในการประชุมวิชาการ “Emerging and Reemerging Viral and Bacterial Threats: Advances in Detection and Pathogenesis Mechanism” ซึ่งเปิดโอกาสให้นักวิจัยจากไทยและญี่ปุ่นได้แลกเปลี่ยนองค์ความรู้เกี่ยวกับโรคติดเชื้อที่เกิดใหม่และโรคที่กลับมาระบาดอีกครั้ง

การผลักดัน MOU ระหว่างคณะแพทยศาสตร์ มข. และ Osaka University เพื่อสร้าง หลักสูตร Double Degree ด้านจุลชีววิทยา ถือเป็นอีกก้าวสำคัญของมหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่นในการเสริมสร้างความร่วมมือด้านวิจัยระดับนานาชาติและยกระดับการศึกษาด้านจุลชีววิทยาและโรคติดเชื้อของไทยให้ก้าวไกลสู่เวทีโลก
